How Is Typing Speed Measured? Understanding WPM and Accuracy
Typing speed is often reported in words per minute (WPM), but a useful result should also account for accuracy. A person who types quickly while making many errors may need more time to produce a clean final document than someone who types at a steadier pace.
What does WPM mean?
Many typing tests use a convention in which five characters, including spaces, count as one word. Under that convention, estimated WPM is the number of characters typed divided by five and then divided by elapsed minutes. Some tests use different rules, so check the scoring method.
Why accuracy matters
Accuracy compares the characters typed with the target text. In this website’s practice tool, displayed accuracy is based on matching characters divided by the number of characters entered. Other services may count errors differently, particularly when backspaces and corrections are involved.
Example calculation
Suppose a learner types 300 characters in one minute and 270 characters match the target. Using the five-character convention, the matching-character rate is approximately 54 WPM, while the simple matching-character ratio is 90%. This is an illustrative calculation, not an official examination score.
How to use your result
- Compare tests of similar duration and difficulty.
- Look at speed and accuracy together.
- Repeat a test to see whether your result is consistent.
- Use the official scoring rules for any job or examination test.
WPM is a useful practice indicator, but it does not measure every part of professional typing, such as editing quality, document formatting, or comprehension.
