Typing Tips: Build Speed Without Losing Accuracy
Typing is a practical skill that improves through consistent practice. The goal is not to press keys as quickly as possible; it is to produce correct text comfortably and efficiently.
1. Learn the home row
On a standard QWERTY keyboard, place the left-hand fingers on A, S, D, and F, and the right-hand fingers on J, K, L, and the semicolon key. Let your thumbs rest lightly near the space bar. Adapt your position if your keyboard layout differs.
2. Focus on accuracy first
Frequent errors interrupt rhythm. Slow down enough to recognise patterns and correct mistakes. Increase speed gradually when accuracy becomes more consistent.
3. Practise punctuation and capital letters
Practise commas, quotation marks, apostrophes, colons, semicolons, capital letters, dates, and numbers.
4. Use short, regular sessions
Ten to fifteen minutes of focused practice on most days can be easier to maintain than occasional long sessions. Take breaks when your hands or eyes feel tired.
5. Review your results
Record your WPM and accuracy after a test. Compare sessions of similar length and difficulty rather than judging progress from one result alone.
6. Maintain a comfortable posture
Keep your shoulders relaxed, sit comfortably, and avoid bending your wrists sharply. Stop and seek appropriate advice if typing causes persistent pain or numbness.
