Gross WPM vs Net WPM: What Is the Difference?
Typing test results may use gross WPM, net WPM, or another scoring formula. These labels are not perfectly standardised across every website, so the test instructions should always take priority.
Gross words per minute
Gross WPM usually describes the overall typing rate before an error penalty is applied. A common method treats five characters as one word and divides by elapsed minutes.
Net words per minute
Some tests calculate net WPM by subtracting an error penalty from gross speed. The penalty can vary: one test may subtract a fixed amount per error, while another may use a different rule or report accuracy separately.
Why two websites may disagree
Tests can differ in passage length, character counting, timer behaviour, treatment of backspaces, and error penalties. A result of 40 WPM on one platform therefore may not be directly comparable with 40 WPM on another.
How to compare progress fairly
- Use the same test or scoring method when possible.
- Keep duration and difficulty similar.
- Record accuracy alongside WPM.
- Use the official method required by your employer or examination authority.
In this website’s included tool, the speed estimate uses correctly matched characters divided by five and elapsed minutes. It is a practice estimate, not a formal net-WPM certification.
